Saudade is a glance into João Marco Deloie’s ongoing photo project.
Deloie is an Australian born artist with Brazilian-German heritage. Untitled are part of a work in progress, exhibiting at the 2022 PHOTO Festival as part of their New Photographers program.
Deloie has previously exhibited work as part of the YIRRAMBOI Festival of 2021. The solo exhibition showcased work from Aîkugûabeté, an audio and visual exploration of the Amazonas state in Brazil and its truthful variations. At present, Deloie is developing a body of work that draws on his upbringing in rural Queensland, with several works set to feature among PHOTO 2022 exhibitors.
Untitled are a series of framed and unframed inkjet prints, each varying in size. The works juxtaposes sprawling beaches and mountains against intimate portraits of the artist’s family, consolidating the expansive natural world and the claustrophobic domestic space.
Deloie features work that presents a bold contemplation and curiosity around familial dynamics, identity and displacement. It considers how a fragmented sense of culture and a staggered sense of belonging may influence the well-being of the self. Reflecting on his own coming of age and that of his siblings, Deloie’s work grapples with themes of masculinity, femininity, guilt and the sacrifices made to uphold the family structure.
Deloie is honored to have been selected for PHOTO2022 and is excited to share his work.
Exhibited at James Makin Gallery April 29th - March 17th.
